one of Clint's best

Exceptional, told in a simple and effective manner, with little violence. Eastwood is his usual self,(did I mean wooden) but the rest of the cast, particularly McGoohan and Benjamin are excellent. THe atmosphere is catastrophic, and brilliantly conveyed. It would have been even more effective in b/w. Highly recommended.

Good movie of escape.

Everything in this movie is simple, straight and interesting. One can easily understand what and how they did. But some of the things I find here is people had to assume some of the scene. Like how they were all collected during escape from their shell which viewers can ignore. I think they tried to keep the movie short otherwise it would be long movie.

And the last part when they escaped here assumption works and they were assumed dead I think. The last part I didn't find it well explained. As I said maybe they wanted to keep movie short.

I will give it 8 rating because some scene people has to assume and last part is not clear. Otherwise I would have given 10.

The last of the Eastwood/Siegel collaborations.

"Escape from Alcatraz" was the last time Clint Eastwood worked with Don Siegel after a gap of 8 years. Most of the cast aren't very well known except for Patrick McGoohan, who is outstanding as the cold and austere prison governor. He and Clint Eastwood make for an excellent combination in the scenes they share. If McGoohan was hoping to intimidate Eastwood, it wasn't working! The low key approach works best for this film. The whole thing is very good, with a suitably ambiguous ending.

Don Siegel's direction is amongst his best.
